Lobotomies
were surgical procedures where they would disconnect or damage your prefrontal
cortex from the rest of your brain. It was Walter Freeman, a medical doctor, and untrained surgeon that performed this cruel procedure. What this doctor did just tells us how desperate some people can get in an attempt to "advance science" for fame. This individual used kitchen utensils to perform his procedures and in a matter of 5 minutes he will pick your brain with an ice pick through your eyes and will credit himself of having cured your sickness. He did this procedures to thousands of people who believed that they would be cured from schizophrenia. Unfortunately that never happened they actually ended up worse. Consequences of this procedure were apathy,
loss of the ability to plan or take initiative, memory disorders,
distractibility and loss emotional expressions. I do not have enough words to express my feelings of disgust for the procedure that "Dr. Freeman" did on the thousands of people. In that late 1940's to 1950's more doctors joined on the prefrontal lobotomies and had about 40,000 procedures here in the United States of America. The fact that this "Dr." was performing these procedures because all he really wanted was to gain some type of fame is sickening! Not to mention that the procedure didn't even cure the patients of whatever it was they were trying to get help with. I don't believe that someone would be able to get away with that kind of work today and that's a relief. I found the video to be very disturbing. It's sad that those people were lead to believe they were going to be helped/cured. Good post!
ReplyDeleteThese procedures are very disturbing and how a "doctor" just for fame is willing to do. Instead of helping the patient he only made it worse through this cruel procedure. Very graphic video but it does indeed help understand your feelings of disgust towards Dr. Freeman.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea you had done your post on lobotomy as well! And we even posted the same video!! Great minds really do think alike. And the video we both posted is a quite a good example of how gruesome lobotomy is, specifically revealing how horrific and primitive Walter Freeman's "transorbital lobotomy" (aka ice pick lobotomy) really was. I agree with what you said in reply to my blog, that Walter Freeman himself should've had a lobotomy done on himself. If anything, he was the one who was mentally ill! He was more delusional than the patients he was "treating." I believe he needed an ice pick shoved and hammered into his own psychotic brain much more than his patients did. The path to fame and power can be a dark one, corrupting the person from the inside -- Freeman's desire and blind ambition for fame is a tragic example of how it will destroy those around you, even the people you try to "help". The devastating harm he caused is indescribable.
